Ingredients
- 450 g (1 lb) ground beef
- 15 ml (1 tablespoon) olive oil
- 30 ml (2 tablespoons) JG Oriental Spice Blend
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 15 ml (1 tablespoon) tomato paste
- 60 ml (¼ cup) water
- 4 large pita breads
- 200 g (2 cups) shredded mozzarella cheese
- 60 g (½ cup) crumbled feta cheese
- 15 ml (1 tablespoon) melted butter or olive oil, for cooking
- Salt, to taste
To serve
- 125 ml (½ cup) plain Greek yogurt
- 15 ml (1 tablespoon) lemon juice
- 1 small clove garlic, grated
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until it begins to soften.
- Add the ground beef and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until it is nicely browned and reaches an internal temperature of 71°C (160°F).
- Add the garlic, Oriental spice blend, and tomato paste. Continue cooking for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add the water and cook for another 2 minutes, until the mixture is juicy but not too watery. Season with salt to taste.
- Carefully open the pita breads on one side to form a pocket. Divide the mozzarella, beef mixture, and feta among the pitas. Gently press the pitas to flatten them.
- Lightly brush the outside of the pitas with melted butter or olive oil. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the pitas for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until they are golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted.
- In a small bowl, mix together the Greek yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, and a pinch of salt.
- Cut the crispy pitas in half and serve immediately with the lemon yogurt sauce.
